What’s in your playground? UWL chemistry researchers study trace metal contamination in playground surfaces

Researchers at University of Wisconsin–La Crosse (UWL) analysed playground surfaces — including shredded-rubber, wood-chip and sand materials — from 20+ sites in the region to test for trace metals like lead and arsenic. Universities of Wisconsin. They are using citizen-science sample collection alongside community partners to help school districts and local officials make more informed decisions about playground safety.

Crowley Park is rubber chip-free!

A community celebration was held on August 16 to mark the reopening and resurfacing of Crowley Park, attended by council members, a Parks and Recreation staff member, and local SPACE families. Organizers expressed gratitude to everyone who supported the effort—through meetings, surveys, letters, or conversations—emphasizing that collective action made the change possible.

Community Science Project

The SPACE scientists staffed a booth at this year’s Earth Fair where they talked about the project and distributed citizen scientist test kits. While the weather was less than idea, a steady stream of families visited the exhibit and more than 30 test kits were given out.

Rotary Club provides pollinator patch to middle school

As co-chair of the Environmental Committee in Rotary, I organized a fundraiser with the Rotary Club of La Crosse- Downtown to raise funds to have a pollinator area and rain gardens installed at Lincoln Middle School in La Crosse.
